New Imaging System Reveals Details into 2D Protein Imaging

PerkinElmer Life and Analytical Sciences (Waltham, MA, USA), a global leader in life science research, drug discovery, and cellular science, recently introduced the Geliance 1000, a new 2D imaging system, at the Human Proteome Organization (HUPO) 6th annual World Congress in Seoul, South Korea, in October 2007.

Nance Hall, vice president and general manager of Automation and Detection Solutions, PerkinElmer Life and Analytical Sciences, commented, "Researchers can now tailor a Geliance Imaging System to accommodate any imaging format or application, and capture accurate images from virtually any sample type or format.”

The Geliance range of products is a high-performance suite of bio-imaging systems for virtually all white light, fluorescence, and chemiluminescence applications. The instruments provide excellent line optical performance with easy-to-use hardware and software to provide researchers a choice of optics and lighting options for a broad array of DNA, RNA, and protein applications. The Geliance 1000 captures 2D images from fluorescent and visible stained gels. Its specialized design includes edge illumination to excite proteins stained with cyanine dyes, generating high-quality images with excellent accuracy and reliability.

The system is able to acquire an image up to five times faster than conventional scanning systems. A typical cyanine three-dye gel set can now be captured by the system with 90-micron resolution in less than eight minutes. This compares to a fast laser-based system, which typically takes approximately 42 minutes to scan the same gel set at 100 microns.

Each Geliance 1000 imaging system is available with the Progenesis SameSpots 2D analysis software from Nonlinear Dynamics, Ltd (Newcastle upon Tyne, UK). Progenesis SameSpots image analysis workflow overcomes the limitations of speed, objectivity, and statistical power, to achieve new possibilities for proteomics research.
