Type-Specific Serology Kits for Herpes Simplex

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 16 Jul 2001
New test kits differentiate IgG antibodies to the Herpes simplex virus (HSV) type-1 and type-2. More...
Called HerpeSelect, the kits are truly type-specific because they recognize antibodies to glycoprotein gG1 (from HSV-1) and gG2 (from HSV-2).

Most other HSV antibody detection kits contain residual shared or type-common antigens. Reactivity with shared antigens can cause inaccurate results to be reported in up to 50% of positive patients, according to Focus Technologies (Herndon, VA, USA). Formerly called MRL, Focus developed the new test kits. In clinical trials, HerpeSelect kits have been shown to deliver results comparable to Western blot, with HSV sensitivity and specificity ranging from more than 95% to 100%

HerpeSelect kits have been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in screening expectant mothers to help assess the risk for acquiring and/or transmitting HSV to their infants and also for screening sexually active adults. The kits are intended to provide clinically significant information that can aid the clinician in choosing the most effective course of treatment and to positively impact overall outcomes and costs.
