Rapid Cell Separation Technology

A proprietary blood testing system for performing quantitative immunoassays is based on monoclonal antibody cell separation technology that can selectively isolate, separate, and quantify red cells, white cells, stem cells, and other cells in the blood. More...


The system, called the FastPack System, was developed by Qualigen, Inc. (Carlsbad, CA, USA). The company says its approach is significantly quicker, easier, and less costly than conventional separation technologies that use high-speed centrifuges and filtration mechanisms. Its system, in contrast, comprises the FastPack Analyzer and the FastPack, a multichambered disposable test pack. The user inserts a blood sample into the FastPack test pack, loads the pack into the analyzer, and the system automatically completes the test. By incorporating its cell separation technology into the system, the user can add a blood sample directly to the disposable pack, press a button, and the desired cells are targeted and harvested from the blood within minutes.

Qualigen is investigating the potential application of its technology for the harvesting of stem cells from umbilical cord blood, both for biomedical research purposes and for long-term storage. It now appears that the market for stem cell harvesting will significantly expand. The company is also studying the use of its cell separation technology for isolating and removing certain undesirable cells from transfused blood to guard against the transmission of diseases. Qualigen has received notice from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that its patent application covering its monoclonal antibody-based technology has been allowed.

"Using our cell separation technology in combination with our FastPack System and patented disposable test pack technology, hospitals will be able to quickly and easily separate out stem cells from blood in the umbilical cord immediately after birth,” said Michael S. Poirier, chairman and CEO of Qualigen.
