Rapid, One-Step Test for Malaria

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 30 Oct 2001
A rapid, qualitative one-step test has been developed for the detection of Plasmodium falciparum, one of the parasites that cause malaria. More...
More than 2.5 billion people worldwide are afflicted with malaria, resulting in 1.5 to 2.7 million deaths annually.

The new test is especially important given the recent dramatic resurgence of the disease, says the developer, Trinity Biotech plc (Dublin, Ireland). This resurgence has been attributed to increasing insecticide resistance among mosquitoes and widespread anti-malarial drug resistance in the parasite. However, malaria responds well to therapy when diagnosed early. The new test can aid in the prompt and accurate diagnosis of the disease.

The malaria test is another product in the Uni-Gold line of Trinity Biotech, which also includes tests for HIV, hepatitis B, Strep A, and H pylori. The test works by utilizing monoclonal antibodies on a test strip to detect the presence of the parasite. The test is highly specific and sensitive and comes complete with lancets and pipettes, making it ideal for use in field settings as well as in clinics and hospitals. Additional equipment, a laboratory setting, or trained personnel are not required.
