Hepatitis B Virus DNA Quantification Panel

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 10 Oct 2000
A new nucleic acid quantification panel for hepatitis B virus (HBV) is available for use in blood screening and medical diagnostic laboratories worldwide. More...
The panel has been calibrated to the International Standard of the World Health Organization (WHO) and can be used with virtually any nucleic acid technology.
In the case of HBV infection, viral load based on the quantification of HBV DNA has become an important tool for monitoring the course of infection and the efficacy of treatment. However, inconsistencies in units of measurement between nucleic acid testing (NAT) methodologies complicate the interpretation of viral load data. To solve this problem, an initiative led by the WHO has established international standards for NAT and has recently made available the first International Standard for HBV DNA for NAT assays.

This product mimics a true patient specimen and contains the entire hepatitis B viral genome, thereby enabling laboratories to monitor all testing steps using any NAT method for the detection or quantification of HBV DNA, said Paul D. Neuwald, Ph.D., vice president of research and development at AcroMetrix Corp. (Berkeley, CA, USA), which developed the new assay.
