Staining System Identifies Cancer Marker

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 05 Apr 2002
New staining technology identifies a cancer marker known as RECAF, found on malignant cells from a variety of cancer types but absent in most normal or benign cells. More...

A study of 19 cancer cases by a pathologist with the British Columbia Cancer Agency (Canada) found that all were positively stained with the new system, called Histo-RECAF, and that the intensity of the staining reaction closely approximated the histological grade of the cancer. Since the staining kits can stain metastatic axillary lymph node tissues, Histo-RECAF can be used for lymph node interpretation. The system was developed by BioCurex, Inc. (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, USA). The company is developing products for cancer diagnosis, tumor imaging, and therapeutics.

"It is my opinion that staining with Histo-RECAF is potentially useful in the assessment of clinical specimens and could be invaluable in the interpretation of regional lymph nodes,” said Dr. Jean le Riche, who conducted the study.
