Innovative DNA Ancestry Test

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 17 Oct 2002
A new genetic test called AncestrybyDNA has been developed for the determination of biogeographical ancestry (BGA) or ancestral proportions within individuals.

Specifically, the test reveals the proportional extent to which an individual is of European, Native American, African, East Asian, South/Middle Asian and/or Pacific Islander genetic heritage. More...
It was developed by a group of scientists at DNAPrint Genomics, Inc. (Sarasota, FL, USA), in collaboration with Mark Shriver, Ph.D., assistant professor of anthropology and genetics at Penn State University (University Park, USA). The company says the test is exceptionally accurate.

The test is expected to be useful in the field of personalized medicine, where it could provide practitioners of genomics-based medicine with a comprehensive system for complex trait dissection and patient/subject classification. The test will also be useful in forensics and a new area of medical research called phenomics, says the company. More details on the test can be found at the test's website (www.ancestrybydna.com).
