Automated Assay for Low-Density Lipoprotein

A new automated assay is designed for the direct measurement of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol.

While most laboratories have been able to measure high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides, and total cholesterol, they have had to estimate LDL indirectly, according to a formula. The new assay can provide a more accurate reading, particularly among patients with high levels of triglycerides, where the mathematical calculation can be inaccurate, says Dade Behring (Deerfield, IL, USA), which developed the test. The assay, called ALDL, runs on Dade's Dimension clinical chemistry system.

Another advantage of the assay is that it circumvents any need for batch processing or special sample handling with full random access automation. "The ALDL assay will provide a reimbursable tool for performing this function, with the accuracy of direct measurement,” said Neil Protter, chemistry marketing manager, Dade Behring.
