Combined Chemistry and Immunoassay Test System

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 16 Dec 2002
A new clinical system combines chemistry analysis technology with immunoassay testing capabilities, data management, and automated sample handling. More...
The system has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

By featuring closed-tube sampling technology for both chemistry and immunoassay testing, the system eliminates the need for technologists to de-cap samples and risk exposure to biohazards and repetitive motion injuries. The technology also helps to improve the quality of patient test results by decreasing the risk of sample contamination as a result of exposure to air and evaporation. The system can perform 146 chemistry and immunoassay tests, including those for basic critical care, metabolic, therapeutic drug monitoring, cardiac care, thyroid, fertility, and cancer.

The system features parallel-processing technology to perform both immunoassay and chemistry tests simultaneously for optimal efficiency. This ability enables the system to run a basic metabolic panel in less than two minutes and at the same time to run a critical cardiac troponin I test, which can be generated in as little as 14 minutes. Called the Synchron Lxi 725, the system was developed by Beckman Coulter, Inc. (Fullerton, CA, USA; www.beckmancoulter.com).

"The new features we have incorporated into this instrument enable labs to consolidate workstations, decrease pre-analytical sample processing steps, increase worker safety, and improve test turnaround time without compromising patient test results,” says Scott Garrett, president of Beckman Coulter's clinical diagnostics division.
