New Lipid Panel Introduced

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 11 Feb 2003
A new lipid panel measures total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides, and reports calculated values for low-density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), and the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL. More...

The new panel is from Abaxis, Inc. (Union City, CA, USA) and is for use on the company's Piccolo diagnostic system. The assays for total cholesterol, HDL, and triglycerides have been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The company has received certification from the Cholesterol Reference Method Laboratory Network (CRMLN) of the US Centers for Disease Control for its total cholesterol and HDL assays.

CRMLN was established in 1990 by the CDC to offer reliable assessments of method accuracy through its certification program. These programs utilize specified clinical trial protocols based on analysis of fresh samples from patients, which assures proper classification of patient risk factors when CRMLN certified systems are used.

"This combination of FDA clearance together with CRMLN certification extends our capability to a new class of patient testing and demonstrates to our customers that these assays achieve the accuracy mandated by CRMLN,” said Clint Severson, chairman, president, and CEO of Abaxis.
