Biochip Test for CF Mutations in Prenatal Screening

The test is the result of a collaboration between Quest Diagnostics (Teterboro, NJ, USA) and Thermo Electron (Waltham, MA, USA).

The test, called CF Portrait, is being used by Quest Diagnostics to perform cystic fibrosis carrier screening, which identifies parents who are at risk of having children with the disease. CF screening is recommended by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American College of Medical Genetics for all Caucasian couples contemplating parenthood.

The CF Portrait biochip was designed and is being manufactured by The BioStar unit of Thermo Electron, using the company's Optical ImmunoAssay (OIA) technology to fully automate the detection of nucleic acid hybridization. The biochip is used in conjunction with Quest's DNA extraction and amplification methods. Quest has exclusive rights to incorporate the CF Portrait biochip into its laboratory-testing methods.

"We look forward to expanding our strategic relationship to develop additional genetic targets for biochips beyond cystic fibrosis, and currently have two other multiplex assays under development,” said Marc Casper, president of Thermo's Life and Laboratory Sciences sector.
