Colon Cancer Test Shows 100% Accuracy

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 04 Dec 2000
To date, a blood test has detected colon cancer in all of the 37 patients tested who had the disease. More...
The test also ruled out the 20 patients tested who were cancer-free, detected polyps in all six patients tested who had them, detected one case of diverticulitis, and ruled out the four patients who had other benign diseases.

The test, from Matritech, Inc. (Newton, MA, USA), used mass spectrometry to measure the elevation of nuclear matrix proteins (NMPs) in blood. Multiple clinical studies have validated the ability of NMPs to detect early-stage cancerous abnormalities, says the company. Matritech has other NMP tests under development for the detection of bladder, breast, and prostate cancer.

"We are increasingly confident that these proteins, identified by our seroproteomics discovery process, will be clinically useful for identifying both cancer and precancer of the colon,” said David L. Corbet, president and CEO of Matritech.
