New Microcatheter Enhances Lesion Crossing in Complex Coronary Interventions

Crossing resistant coronary lesions during percutaneous coronary intervention can be hindered by tortuous or calcified anatomy, delaying therapy and complicating device delivery. More...

Many microcatheters rely on braided or coiled construction, which can limit pushability and torque control in difficult lesions. A newly launched device offers an alternative architecture designed to improve force transmission and controlled lesion entry in complex coronary interventions.

Interventional Medical Device Solutions (IMDS; Roden, The Netherlands) has introduced NHanceIT, an over-the-wire, single-lumen microcatheter for the U.S. market. The device is engineered to improve lesion crossing in challenging coronary anatomy encountered during complex procedures. NHanceIT is part of the company’s portfolio aimed at addressing distinct procedural challenges in contemporary coronary interventions.

NHanceIT is built on IMDS’s proprietary Skeleton Backbone technology, which replaces conventional braided or coiled construction with a solid, laser-cut stainless-steel tube. The backbone is tailored across critical catheter sections to meet differing procedural demands, maintaining consistent force transmission from the hub to the distal end. This design targets controlled entry into resistant lesions while preserving device stability under stress.

The microcatheter provides true 1:1 torque response and uses reinforced metal construction to support precise manipulation within resistant segments. An integrated radiopaque tip is designed to maintain structural integrity when navigating calcified anatomy and during passage through stents. Early U.S. commercial use has been reported, with operators highlighting deliverability through difficult anatomy.

The Skeleton Backbone platform is now available in the U.S. within NHanceIT as well as other IMDS catheters, and the company plans to broaden access while building real‑world experience with the platform among interventional operators.

“NHanceIT represents an important step in bringing our proprietary Skeleton Backbone platform to more physicians in the U.S. and around the world,” said Edwin Schulting, CEO of IMDS. “This is an entirely new catheter technology that enables us to tailor each device to the specific clinical challenge it is intended to address and, ultimately, help improve outcomes in complex PC.”
