Alert Signal Checks Safety of Drugs or Tests

By HospiMedica staff writers

A new capability added to software used in medical records systems checks patient history and provides real-time alerts about any possible dangers at the point of care.

Called Medcin+, the software can perform a check of a patient's entire medical history in milliseconds and alert a doctor about dangers in tests ordered, procedures requested, or medications prescribed for the patient. More...
This enables the doctor to decide whether to continue with, modify, or cancel an order. Medcin+ includes more than 130,000 alert conditions with four levels of potential severity. This new software, which can be incorporated into Medcin products already in use in electronic medical record (EMR) systems, is the product of Medicomp Systems (Chantilly, VA, USA). The company is a developer of clinical drug information and medication management products.

"As medicine has become so complex, Medicomp's alerts elevate the computerized medical record to that of guardian of safe patient care,” said Edmund Herrold, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of medicine, Weill Medical College, Cornell University (New York, NY, USA).

Medicin is currently used by thousands of clinicians and the U.S. Department of Defense Military Health System. Medicin+ also has an interface available to Gold Standard Multimedia's electronic drug information and management database, Clinical Pharmacology.
