Clinical Infotainment System Assists Patient Care

A new patient entertainment system also doubles as an interface for clinicians to access electronic medical records (EMRs) and internal hospital information systems (HISs).

The Barco (Kortrijk, Belgium) CareConnex system, powered by Hospedia (Slough, United Kingdom), is a fully integrated interactive patient care enterprise solution designed to support a better patient experience and improve hospital efficiency and profitability. More...
Using the system, patients can play games, run a range of applications, watch movies, order food, and communicate with nurses right from the terminal. They can also learn more about their condition, review results of their tests and imaging studies, and provide feedback about their stay.

The CareConnex system uses advanced point-of-care (POC) enterprise software delivered on a range of high-quality, innovative Smart Terminals at the patient bedside, and includes all associated accessories, back office systems, integration, and support expertise. In addition, Hospedia offers professional and managed services, such as content aggregation and yield management, to hospitals worldwide. The solution helps hospitals deliver better patient care, ensure clinical efficiency, achieve Meaningful Use (with respect to technology implementation), and create potential new revenue streams.

“CareConnex is an interactive patient care solution, offering patient media, patient engagement, and clinical workflow services right at the bedside,” said Warren Kressinger-Dunn, VP of Strategic Marketing for Barco’s POC division. “But more than providing infotainment, CareConnex gives hospitals the tools to provide care more efficiently and cost-effectively, without compromising quality or the financial bottom line.”

“We are seeing that patients who are actively engaged throughout their hospital stay typically experience greater overall satisfaction, which can also positively influence their clinical outcome,” added Mr. Kressinger-Dunn. “From this perspective, CareConnex directly impacts patient satisfaction scores, such as Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, which are becoming more important than ever.”

Images from patient T1, who had menstrual cycle–dependent right shoulder pain. (A) Maximum-intensity-projection images show abnormal findings for right diaphragm (arrowhead), bilateral round ligaments, peritoneum around bilateral ovaries, and left fallopian tube. Combined PET/MRI show hyperintense lesion with focal uptake inferior of right diaphragm, indicative of endometriosis (arrowhead, B). Confirmatory laparoscopy demonstrated extensive pelvic disease and implants of right diaphragm (C) that stained intensely positive for FAP (D). (Image Credit: Schindler P, Brandt J, Bobe S, et al.
