Infusion Pump Interface Reduces Errors

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 04 Dec 2000
A new real-time interface between a clinical data system and an infusion pump is designed to provide automatic real-time data capture in hectic intensive care environments, saving time for clinicians and reducing medical errors related to incorrect data entry and incorrect calculations. More...

Called the Real-Time Fluids module, the interface helps to minimize computation and recording errors and gives clinicians greater control over fluid management. The interface is the product of Picis (Arlington, VA, USA) and is designed to interface with the CareSuite of Picis, which automates the flow of clinical data from medical devices and organizes caregiver workflow. Automatic data collection by CareSuite directly from the infusion pump assures clinicians of accurate fluid infusions. CareSuite software checks for the infused drug name and displays it, along with a verification message. When the clinician verifies the correct drug, a new order is automatically placed in the fluid flowsheet section of the CareSuite automated patient record along with the infusion rate.

CareSuite only supports the new interface with infusion pumps that can send the drug name along with the rate of infusion. Currently, drivers for the Fresenius Lima and the Braun Dianet have been developed for Picis customers, with others in development.

"Interfacing to infusion pumps is about saving time for the clinician at the bedside. But, interfacing to infusion pumps via the CareSuite Real-Time Fluids module is also about safety,” said Kathy Doub, vice president, product marketing, Picis.
