Boston Scientific and Biophan in MRI Collaboration

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 21 Nov 2003
An agreement to make medical devices more compatible with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been announced by Boston Scientific Corp. More...
(Boston, MA, USA) and Biophan Technologies, Inc. (Rochester, NY, USA).

The joint development program will seek to resolve problems caused by the interference of metal objects, including medical devices, with MRI technology. Since interference can obscure images of tissue, bone, and metal in areas near metal objects and pose safety problems, some medical devices are not permitted near MRI diagnostic tools. Biophan develops and markets technology to enable biomedical devices to be safe and compatible with MRI and other equipment using magnetic fields and radio waves. The company has also developed a coating technology that can reduce image interference caused by metal objects. Boston Scientific develops and markets medical devices used in a broad range of interventional specialties.

"We are pleased to be working with Boston Scientific on the demonstration of our technology on specific products that today are limited for use with MRI, " said Michael Weiner, CEO of BioPhan. "Biophan's goal is to make medical devices both safe and compatible with MR imaging.”
