(Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, USA) has acquired Gembro Pty Ltd. (Victoria, Australia), a company specializing in medical and surgical products and formerly the exclusive distributor of Applied Medical's products in Australia. Terms were not disclosed.

Gembro, which also conducts business as Monarch Medical, began as a local distribution company in Queensland, Australia in 1986, specializing in both laboratory and medical healthcare products. By the year 2000, the company had grown significantly larger and had become predominantly a medical and surgical products distributor with heavy emphasis on operating theaters. The new name of the company will be Applied Medical Australia Pty Ltd., which will focus on expanding the marketing and direct sales throughout Australia in the areas of cardiovascular, vascular, laparoscopy, general surgery, and urology.

"The acquisition provides an even greater foundation for us to go forward and expand distribution and the presence of Applied's technologies in Australia,” said Ted Stanley, president, Applied Medical Distribution.
