Software to Upgrade Sub-Saharan Blood Supply

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 06 May 2004
The delivery of software to upgrade the blood supply in Sub-Saharan Africa has been announced by Global Med Technologies, Inc. More...
(Denver, CO, USA).

The two software programs were the SafeTrace donor management system and the SafeTrace Tx transfusion management system. Together they contribute to Vein-To-Vein tracking from donor collection to patient transfusion. Both are the products of Global Med's division, Wyndgate Technologies (Eldorado Hills, CA, USA; www.wyndgate.com). This delivery marks the beginning of Global Med's foray into international markets, where there are abundant opportunities to help underdeveloped countries upgrade their blood supply.

Blood centers are faced with blood shortages and an environment of possible contamination of the blood supply with blood-borne diseases, such as HIV, hepatitis, and West Nile Virus. These factors, especially the spread of HIV, are becoming drivers in the international market for blood center and transfusion services. Most blood banks and hospitals in sub-Saharan Africa utilize manual processes and maintain only manual records with little or no computer software or automation to help control the testing and safe release of blood and blood products.

Wyndgate's donor and hospital transfusion information systems, with their comprehensive safety features, will help to enhance the quality of blood products distributed throughout sub-Saharan Africa by helping to ensure that only suitable blood products are released for transfusion. Potentially, this may help to decrease the transmission rate of HIV/AIDS through blood transfusions in sub-Saharan Africa, which in turn may ultimately help to save many lives.

Mick Ruxin, M.D., chairman and CEO of Global Med Technologies stated, "This is truly a milestone for Global Med--something that the management team always believed would happen and which has the potential to catapult the company into many other countries to sell its medical software management systems.” Wyndgate has strategic marketing relationships with a number of companies in the blood services products industry. Through these partnerships, Global Med is poised to take advantage of expanded market opportunities for its blood services management software.
