Jude Medical, Inc. (St. Paul, MN, USA) has agreed to acquire Endocardial Solutions, Inc. (ESI, also in St. Paul) for about U.S.$273 million.

Endocardial Solutions develops, manufactures, and markets the EnSite System used for the navigation and localization of diagnostic and therapeutic catheters used in atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation and other electrophysiology catheterization procedures. The EnSite system is also used for the diagnostic mapping of abnormal heart rhythms with a 3D graphical display of the heart's electrical activity.

"This transaction is another step forward in St. Jude Medical's drive for leadership in providing medical devices and services to help cure AF as well as benefit the broader field of electrophysiology,” remarked Daniel J. Starks, chairman, president, and CEO of St. Jude Medical.

Completion of the ESI acquisition will further broaden St. Jude Medical's electrophysiology technology and program consistent with the company's "surround AF” strategy, offering doctors devices and catheter systems to diagnose, suppress, and cure AF. The company's pacemaker and implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) systems incorporate the company's AF suppression algorithm that can suppress atrial fibrillation.
