Integra LifeSciences Acquires GMS

Posted on 14 May 2001
A German manufacturer of an oxygen monitoring system for brain tissue, GMSmbH (Mielkendorf, Germany), has been acquired by Integra LifeSciences Holdings Corp. More...
(Plainsboro, NJ, USA) for US$2.3 million. Revenues of the acquired business were around $1.2 million in 2000. Integra is a leading provider of products that measure clinically important brain parameters.

The brain tissue oxygen monitoring system, called Licox, provides continuous quantitative regional monitoring of dissolved oxygen and temperature in cerebral tissues. These measurements are valuable diagnostic and prognostic indicators with important clinical and research applications. The small size and long-term stability of the sensors make the system useful for critical care and intraoperative monitoring. The system's accuracy at low critical thresholds of brain tissue oxygenation is essential for diagnosis and treatment control of brain tissue hypoxia and ischemia, states Integra LifeSciences.

"This acquisition should accelerate the introduction of the Licox system in markets around the world,” said Stuart M. Essig, president and CEO of Integra. "Additionally, our acquisition of the underlying technology provides us with an opportunity to leverage our existing technology base with intracranial monitoring to develop even more advanced devices.”
