Diagnostic testing is making increasing use of immunologic analysis as a detection method. More...
Total worldwide sales of immunoassays for clinical, food, and environmental applications are estimated at US$15.55 billion in 2001, according to a new report from Business Communications Co., Inc. (Norwalk, CT, USA; Immunoassays: Technologies, Markets).

The total market is expected to grow at an average annual growth rate of 5.1% over the next five years, from $15.5 billion in 2001 to $19.9 billion in 2006. Sales of clinical immunoassays make up most of this market, with estimated sales of $19.1 billion in 2006. Clinical immunoassay tests using urine samples will represent slightly more than half of the clinical market, with an estimated $10.7 billion in sales in 2006. Sales of blood-banking immunoassay tests are estimated at $1.4 billion in 2006.

As the human genome-sequencing project nears completion and the genomes of other organisms are sequenced, the number of known proteins and potential number of proteins will increase. This growth will increase the number of diagnostic immunoassays for use in clinical applications as well as for food and environmental applications, using both current and developing technologies, the report's authors predict.
