Alliance to Improve Surgical Performance

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 05 Feb 2002
A strategic alliance to provide increased operating room (OR) flexibility and efficiency has been formed by Smith & Nephew Endoscopy (Andover, MA, USA) and Computer Motion (Santa Barbara, CA, USA). More...
Computer Motion's Hermes Control Center will be interfaced with Smith & Nephew's portfolio of endoscopy products.

The Hermes Control Center is a centralized system that enables surgeons to have direct control over a network of OR-specific equipment, including cameras, light sources, tables, and digital acquisition systems. The devices can be controlled by simple surgeon voice commands or a hand-held touch-screen pendant. The alliance will add another partner into Smith & Nephew's Digital OR initiative, designed to enable hospitals and surgical centers to improve performance through innovative medical technologies.

"We believe that our alliance with Smith & Nephew Endoscopy, a world leader in the endoscopy market, will help Hermes gain additional significant market share in the more than 90,000 operating rooms worldwide,” said Robert W. Duggan, CEO and chairman of Computer Motion. The company develops and markets computer-enhanced robotic surgical systems and has helped transition the surgical community from open procedures to endoscopic procedures.
