Global Alliance in Radiation Oncology

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 03 Nov 2000
Marconi Medical Systems (Cleveland, OH, USA) has agreed to allow Elekta Oncology Systems, Inc. More...
(Norcross, GA, USA) to offer an array of Marconi products for radiation oncology. These include Marconi's Acqsim CT (computed tomography) system for simulating radiotherapy. The two companies have also agreed on a collaboration to introduce connectivity protocols that will enhance communication between their respective product lines.

Because it improves patient comfort, facilitates fast and accurate planning, and delivers greater departmental productivity, CT simulation is a growing trend, Elekta notes. The Acqsim CT scanner features a localization package, patient-marking system, and a virtual simulator capable of producing real-time digitally composited radiographs. The Acqsim can send images, anatomical volumes, and beams to Elekta's Precise Plan Treatment Planning system, using DICOM. This system can deliver planning for extracranial stereotactic radiotherapy or comprehensive planning.

Through the introduction of new products, upgrades of existing platforms, and the introduction of co-marketed products, Elekta says it offers complete solutions that improve clinical flexibility and investment security. "This agreement is a perfect example of an alliance where we provide clinical solutions to our customers by integrating Elekta technology with other market-leading systems through modern connectivity protocols,” said Peter J. Gaccione, vice president, Elekta Oncology Systems.
