Joint Effort to Develop Wireless Pulse Oximetry

An agreement to develop wireless pulse oximetry monitoring equipment using Bluetooth technology has been announced by Nonin Medical, Inc. More...
(Minneapolis, MN, USA) and Penell A/S (Hadsund, Denmark).

Nonin has developed a broad product line of pulse oximeters, sensors, accessories, and software. Penell is a developer of wireless solutions for medical and healthcare devices, utilizing its expertise in wireless technologies and its experience in developing electronics and software for medical devices.

The development of a wireless pulse oximeter will eliminate the need for the cable that currently connects a sensor, often attached to the patient's fingertip, with a monitor. Patients will be able to walk around or shift positions in bed without being restricted by the cable, says Nonin. "Penell is widely recognized for its leadership in applying wireless technologies, including Bluetooth, to the design and development of new and innovative medical products,” noted Gary Tschautscher, CEO of Nonin. "We are pleased to join forces in this endeavor with a company of Penell's caliber.”
