A simple breathalyser test uses artificial intelligence (AI) to electronically "smell' the novel coronavirus and detect infection in less than two minutes.

Scientists at the Gadjah Mada University (Jogjakarta, Indonesia) have developed the GeNose C19 or Gadjah Mada Electronic Nose that rapidly detects COVID-19 using only a person’s breath. More...
The electronic-based diagnostic tool uses the cloud computing system to deliver real-time diagnosis results and can also be run in parallel through a centralized diagnostic process to maintain data validity for all connected devices.

The device uses powerful filters and suction to remove all COVID-19 droplets or particles and sterilize itself for the next test. GeNose C19 offers the advantages of lower cost per test, instant test results, ease of mass production, and high specificity and sensitivity. The Indonesian government has granted a distribution permit for GeNose C19 which is already being used to screen patients for COVID-19 by three hospitals across the country.

"We need faster screening to prevent people getting infected," said Bambang Brodjonegoro, Indonesia's Minister for Research and Technology. "This will accelerate the detection process and mitigate the risk of the pandemic spreading."
