Transplant Surgeons Share International Medical Prize

Three transplant surgeons have been announced as the winners of the King Faisal International Prize for Medicine, awarded this year in recognition of outstanding contributions in the field of organ transplantation. More...


The winners were Sir Roy Calne, a liver transplant surgeon at the University of Cambridge (UK); Norman Shumway, a heart transplant surgeon at Stanford University (Palo Alto, CA, USA); and Thomas E. Starzl, a transplant surgeon who has transplanted many different organs at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (PA, USA).

The awards were presented at a formal ceremony in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on February 17. The three winners shared the cash prize of US$200,000 and each received a gold medal. The prize is awarded each year. Nominations are accepted from relevant institutions and organizations around the world.
