UV Disinfection Technology Combats Superbugs

An Ultraviolet C band (UVC) disinfection robot automatically calculates the pathogen-lethal UV dose needed to kill pathogens and disinfect a room. More...

The TRU-D SmartUVC portable disinfection system achieves high efficiency by automatically and consistently providing touchless UVC room disinfection, calculating the UVC light emission required for each room, dynamically compensating for room size, shape, and other dose-altering variables such as the position of contents, windows, blinds, and doors. Among the features of the system are dose assurance delivered to direct and shadowed high touch surfaces, rapid room disinfection, and environmental safety, since UVC light is not transmitted through glass windows.
The system technology is based on the fact that UV light near a wavelength of 254 nm induces the formation of pyrimidine dimmers from thymine and cytosine. These dimers in turn cause breaks in microbial DNA that make genetic replication impossible, thus destroying the organisms or rendering them unable to grow or reproduce. The efficacy of the UVC irradiation is a function of many different parameters, such as intensity, exposure time, lamp placement, and air movement patterns.

TRU-D thus automates the labor-intensive process of manual cleaning, providing cleaner rooms and faster turnover without human error and without using chemicals. The disinfection progress is displayed in real-time to ensure 3-4 log surface disinfection of pathogens in any space. Human error, such as missed surfaces, recontamination, and improper chemical applications, are eliminated. An added bonus is that rooms can be occupied immediately after treatment. The TRU-D SmartUVC portable disinfection robot is a product of TRU-D (Memphis, TN, USA).
