System for Monitoring CNS During Anesthesia

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 14 Mar 2003
A new monitoring system provides information on the electrical activity of the central nervous system (CNS) during general anesthesia. More...
The system is designed to help clinicians gain a complete picture of the patient's status and facilitate prompt decision making.

Called M-Entropy, the monitoring system is a new module of the Adequacy of Anesthesia suite of Datex-Ohmeda (Helsinki, Finland). Together with the other parameters of the Adequacy of Anesthesia, M-Entropy provides an integrated solution for decision making even in the most demanding situations, says Datex-Ohmeda. It may also help the anesthesiologist to ensure faster and more-predictable wake-up and extubation, and may help prevent unexpected recovery and avoid unnecessarily deep anesthesia.

"I have found the module especially useful in operations where the patient needs to be paralyzed due to surgical reasons. In my experiences, the use of Entropy leads to increased efficiency because of faster turnaround in patient flow both in the operating theater and postoperative care. The module will most certainly improve the quality of anesthesia care,” said Dr. Arvi-Hankala, senior anesthesiologist at Tampere University Hospital (Tampere, Finland), who has had the system in clinical trials for several months.
