Pinless Hip Surgery Performed

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 26 Dec 2000
Pinless total hip replacement (THR) surgery with a robotic surgery system was recently performed in a clinical trial at Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento (CA, USA) by William Bargar, M.D., with clinical support from Prof. More...
Dr. Borner, medical director of BGU Clinical in Frankfurt, Germany. Prof. Dr. Borner is widely known as a leading practitioner of robotic joint replacement surgeries.

The pinless procedure eliminates the need for preoperative surgery to place the pins, so patients recover sooner. It also eliminates the postoperative knee pain occasionally experienced by patients and reduces surgical time and cost. The Robodoc Surgical Assistant System was used in the surgery with software called DigiMatch for pinless registration.

Robodoc is used for total joint arthroplasty. Robodoc and DigiMatch are the products of Integrated Surgical Systems, Inc. (Davis, CA, USA), which envelops and markets robotic products for surgical applications. Two additional sites are shortly to join the clinical trial on pinless THR surgery. All sites will use the VerSys line of cementless hip prosthesis made by Zimmer, Inc. (Warsaw, IN, USA).
