Virtual Reality Procedure at Euro-PCR

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 08 Jun 2004
A carotid stenting procedure was rehearsed on a virtual-reality simulator before the actual procedure was performed on the patient during a live case transmission at the annual Paris (France) Course on Revascularization (Euro-PCR). More...

The training simulator is based on technology developed by Mentice AB (Gothenburg, Sweden) and provides realistic visual and tactile feedback. The virtual anatomy used in the rehearsal is created from a 3D scan of the patient's anatomy.

"In several clinical studies it has been proven that our Procedicus simulators, such as MIST and VIST, improved performance in the operating room. With the unique procedure rehearsal capability and fidelity demonstrated at the Euro-PCR, we can now advance the field of endovascular simulation to the next generation: patient-specific training and pre-procedure planning and rehearsal,” explained Jonas Ohlsson, president of Mentice.

"Virtual Procedure Rehearsal brings several advantages, including anticipation of complications, better informed selection of tools and techniques to be used, and reduction of procedure time,” said Dr. Van Sambeek, a vascular surgeon from Erasmus Hospital (Rotterdam, The Netherlands), who moderated the session. "We believe these advances will result in higher procedure success rates and in cost reductions.” The annual Paris Course on Revascularization is focused on education and training of physicians who treat patients with cardiovascular diseases.
