Laser Treatment Superior for Enlarged Prostate

The findings from four studies have shown that a laser system offers better long-term clinical efficacy for treating benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), is safer, and has fewer side effects when compared to all other minimally invasive and surgical options. More...
The studies were presented at the annual meeting of the American Urological Association in San Francisco (CA, USA) in May 2004.

One study demonstrated excellent efficacy and safety of the photo-selective vaporization of the prostate (PVP) and GreenLight laser system with disposable fiber optic devices developed by Laserscope (San Jose, CA, USA). A second study showed that the procedure was efficacious and in some respects safer than electrovaporization of the prostate. A two-year six-center trial revealed the long-term efficacy of the PVP procedure. A fourth study that analyzed clinical costs and outcomes found PVP to be the most cost-effective modality for the healthcare system, with better outcomes and a lower rate of complications.

"Further, unlike other vaporization laser technologies that have been on the market for years, PVP is relatively fast and simple to learn and can be used on a wide range of gland sizes using the same surgical technique,” noted Eric Reuter, president and CEO of Laserscope.
