MRI-Guided Technique for Cardiac Ablation

A study has shown that cardiac radiofrequency (RF) ablation can be performed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) guided technology, destroying abnormal electrical pathways that cause heart rhythm problems. More...
The study, reported in the August issue of Circulation, was conducted by a team of researchers from the departments of radiology and cardiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHU, Baltimore, MD, USA).

The new technique utilizes a miniature internal coil developed by Surgi-Vision (Columbia, MD, USA) and cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last year. The benefits of using MRI instead of x-rays, says Surgi-Vision, are the elimination of ionizing radiation exposure, greater accuracy in therapy titration, and the facilitation of the creation of linear, contiguous, and transmural lesions.

"This approach represents a shift away from x-ray guided techniques and establishes the feasibility of performing cardiovascular intervention under MRI guidance,” said lead author Albert C. Lardo, Ph.D.

Surgi-Vision is an emerging medical device company formed to manufacture and market specialized imaging products based on research conducted at JHU. The company is developing a range of devices for the MRI-guided diagnosis and treatment of various disorders.
