System for Posterior Spinal Fixation

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 07 Jun 2005
A new dual ball rod (DBR) minimally disruptive system is designed for percutaneous posterior spinal fixation.

The SpheRx DBR system, from NuVasive, Inc. More...
(San Diego, CA, USA; www.nuvasive.com), has the ability to perform instrument-free compression. This allows the spine surgeon to easily apply up to 5 mm of compression by simply moving the DBR guides with his hands. This eliminates the need for additional bulky or awkward instruments during compression.

The product's design allows for a simple, constrained rod insertion through a dual ball with spherical ends, which are geometrically constrained within the DBR guides during rod insertion, guiding the rod directly and easily into the heads of the pedicle screws. The spherical ends of the rod fit securely within the screws at both ends of the construct with no rod overhand, reducing the incidence of superior facet joint violation and tissue trauma. This unique fit also gives the surgeon total confidence that the rod is seated properly in the screws and eliminates the possibility of post-operative migration.

The SpheRx DBR system also can be seamlessly integrated with NuVasive's NeuroVision nerve avoidance system, where sequentially dilating insulators allow for dynamic stimulation and nerve monitoring every step of the procedure. The company's minimally disruptive surgical platform is called Maximum Access Surgery, or MAS. This platform offers both reduced surgery and hospital time as well as faster recovery.

"We believe the SpheRx DBR is quite possibly the most straightforward minimally disruptive fixation system available today,” remarked Alexis V. Lukianov, chairman and CEO of NuVasive. "Surgeon feedback has been excellent and endorses the superiority over what has been available on the market.”
