Filtration for Auto-Transfusion

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 11 Aug 2005
A disposable device made of medically compatible materials that separate more than 90% of lipid micro emboli is based on patented particle separation by ultrasound (PARSUS).

PARSUS allows highly effective filtering by ultrasound waves of undersirable foreign particles that become mixed with blood during cardiac procedures. More...
This allows doctors to give back a patient's lost blood in a safe and efficient manner, potentially reducing the many complications currently associated with blood transfusion. The filtering can be used in all patients requiring cardiac surgery, including heart valve replacement or repair and coronary artery bypass. The PARSUS technology is being commercialized by ATS Medical, Inc. (Minneapolis, MN, USA), a leading developer of mechanical heart valve technology and related cardiac surgery accessories.

The PARSUS technology was originally developed by ErySave AB, a Swedish research firm founded specifically to explore PARSUS as a means of increasing efficacy, user friendliness, and quality performance in cardiac surgery by removal of micro emboli from the blood.

"Our design vastly improves the amount of lipid micro emboli removed from the blood during cardiac surgeries in a cost-efficient manner,” said Michael D. Dale, chairman and CEO of ATS Medical. "Our next goal is to achieve the next significant milestone in this development program by the end of the current year.” ATS sells its products in more than 61 countries. To date, more than 100,000 ATS Open Pivot heart valves have been implanted in patients worldwide.
