Resection Ablator Offers Options to Surgeons

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 30 Apr 2001
A new surgical tool for the arthroscopy market offers surgeons the option of mechanical resection, ablation, or coagulation, all in one tool. More...
The new tool was launched at the spring meeting of the Arthroscopy Association of North America in Seattle (WA, USA).

The three-in-one instrument gives surgeons a choice of methods for soft tissue resection and removal, gives immediate access to the coagulation function as needed, and eliminates the need to change instruments during procedures, reducing time spent in the operating room. Called Trident, the instrument is the product of Linvatec Corp., a subsidiary of ConMed Corp. (Utica, NY, USA; www.conmed.com). Trident is used in conjunction with the new Linvatec Advantage shaver and power system. The electrosurgical function is powered by and compatible with several electrosurgical generators currently available.

"Arthroscopic surgeons have never had the option of mechanical resection, ablation, or coagulation in one tool, and the Trident provides this important choice with convenience and exceptional performance,” said Hugh West, M.D., a sports medicine surgeon from the University of Utah (Salt Lake City, USA). "The Trident reduces procedure time and eliminates the expense associated with additional specialized tools.”
