Técnica nueva de imagenología diseñada para cirugía más precisa del cáncer

La técnica muestra potencial particular para mejorar la cirugía de seno, próstata, y cáncer pulmonar, cuyos límites tumorales pueden ser difíciles de monitorizar en estadíos avanzados, de acuerdo con los investigadores.

Los cirujanos de cáncer operan "a ciegas” sin una manera exacta de determinar en tiempo real si han removido o no todo el tejido enfermo, lo cual es la clave para la cirugía exitosa. La técnica puede también ayudarles a los cirujanos de cáncer a evitar cortar estructuras vitales como vasos sanguíneos y nervios, añadieron los científicos.

"Con esta técnica es realmente la primera vez que los cirujanos de cáncer pueden ver estructuras que de otra manera son invisibles, suministrando cirugía verdaderamente guiada por imagen”, comentó el director del proyecto Dr. John Frangioni, del Centro Médico Beth Israel Deaconess (Boston, MA, EUA). "Si podemos ver el cáncer, tenemos una oportunidad de curarlo”.

El sistema es llamado FLARE (resección y exploración ayudada por fluorescencia). Bajo desarrollo durante la década pasada, el sistema portátil consiste de un sistema de imagenología cercano al infrarrojo (CIR), un monitor de video, y un computador. "El sistema no tiene partes movibles, usa LED [diodos emisores de luz] en vez de láseres para la excitación, no hace contacto con el paciente, y es estéril”, concluyó el Dr. Frangioni.
