Advanced Delivery System for Inferior Vena Cava Filters

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 06 Oct 2009
A next-generation inferior vena cava (IVC) filter delivery system simplifies jugular deployment, minimizes trauma, and adds procedural speed, control, and accuracy.

The Cook Medical NavAlign Delivery System is designed to minimize trauma and streamline filter placement, with features that include a hemostatic valve that minimizes blood loss at the point of entry and a multipurpose dilator, which has radiopaque sizing bands and flushing sideports that decrease fluoroscopy time and the amount of contrast medium required. The delivery system facilitates jugular placement of the IVC by correctly aligning the IVC with the jugular vein. The NavAlign Delivery System is a product of Cook Medical (Bloomington, IN, USA), and is available for both the Cook Celect and Günther Tulip filters.

"Cook has been perfecting its IVC filter platforms for the last three decades, a milestone underpinned with the introduction of NavAlign,” said Mark Breedlove, director of the vascular therapies technology unit of Cook Medical. "We hope our pedigree in this area, and continued commitment to innovation, will encourage more physicians to adopt our platforms and procedural products to reduce the risk of recurrent pulmonary emboli.”

An inferior vena cava filter is implanted into the IVC to prevent fatal pulmonary emboli (PE). IVC filters are used in case of contraindication to anticoagulation, failure of anticoagulation, or complication to anticoagulation in patients who have a venous thromboembolic disease or in prophylactic use for patients with a high risk of PE, by catching the blood clots before they get to the lungs.
