Integrated Operating Room Solution to Streamline Robotic Surgery

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 08 Oct 2009
Steris Corporation (Mentor, OH, USA) and Intuitive Surgical have signed a collaboration agreement to enable the integration of both companies' technologies into advanced minimally invasive (MIS) robotic surgical suites.

The collaboration will enable the two companies to meld the Steris HD 360 Suites' enhanced integration, visualization, and equipment management capabilities with daVinci Si surgical system to create a solution that is highly advanced and technologically seamless, creating an optimized surgical environment for patients and surgical staff in the operating room (OR). Surgical workflow is improved by supporting a variety of digital media and their outputs, keeping cords and other equipment off the floor, and creating obstacle-free functional areas for the robotics and other technologies. Besides the daVinci Si Surgical System, the integration will include the Harmony LED Surgical Lighting and Visualization System, Harmony Equipment Management System, Steris' many integration and high-definition video and output technologies, Steris 5085 surgical tables, and nurse documentation stations. The clinical training lab will also used for design optimization activities.

"What matters most to our healthcare customers is that they have the best available tools to continually improve patient outcomes,” said Bill O'Riordan, vice president and general manager of Surgical Solutions at Steris. "Working with the industry leader in surgical robotics, we are making possible a solution for the ultimate minimally invasive robotic surgical suite – combining elements of our HD 360° Suites, the daVinci Si Surgical System and the new da Vinci Si VisionBoom Upgrade. This enhanced minimally invasive surgery suite is designed to increase efficiency for surgeons and their staffs.”

The new daVinci Si system introduces several enabling features, including enhanced high-definition 3D vision with up to 10x magnification and an immersive view of the operative field for superior clinical capability, an updated user interface for streamlined setup and OR turnover, extensibility for digital OR integration, and dual-console capability to support training and collaboration during minimally invasive surgery. The system retains and builds on the core technology of EndoWrist instrumentation and Intuitive motion technology, which replicates the experience of open surgery by preserving natural eye-hand-instrument alignment and intuitive instrument control.
