Cutting-edge hybrid operating rooms (ORs) can be used for a variety of complex procedures, as well as for conversions between them, benefiting both patients and staff.

Hybrid ORs combine diagnostic and surgical facilities, which are usually found in separate locations. More...
Large-scale imaging equipment used for angiographies, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) capabilities make imaging possible even during the actual surgical intervention. In case of an emergency, surgical interventions can be carried out even during vascular catheterization procedures, helping to manage complications. In addition to the integration of the OR with a cardiac catheter laboratory, the hybrid OR also enables new interdisciplinary options such as minimally invasive cardiac valve reconstruction, as well as other surgical disciplines such as traumatology, neurology, and orthopedics.

Maquet (Rastatt, Germany) will be presenting its hybrid OR at the Medica 2010 show, which will be held during November 2010 in Düsseldorf (Germany). The fully equipped OR set up at the exhibition will feature the company's Magnus OR table and the Allura Xper FD 20 angiography equipment manufactured by Philips Healthcare (Best, The Netherlands).

"The objective is to adapt the room concept and the technical equipment optimally to the work-flow in the OR. This means that, for instance, for the combination of workplace for heart surgery and cardiology, optimal working conditions for both disciplines must be maintained,” said Klaus Christian, global project manager of the Hybrid OR at Maquet: "For this purpose, the positioning of the OR table, the angiography equipment and the other systems are coordinated with the interdisciplinary OR team to achieve optimum workflow.”
