New Line of Ophthalmic Solutions Unveiled

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 04 Apr 2011
Canon USA (Lake Success, NY, USA), a leader in digital imaging, presented its full line of ophthalmic device innovations at the International Vision Expo East, held during March 2011 in New York (NY, USA).

Making its debut was the prototype Canon TX-20P Full-Auto Tonometer, designed to capture the complete automated measurement of both intraocular pressure (IOP) and central corneal thickness (CCT) in both eyes, helping eye care professionals detect and monitor eye care disorders--such as glaucoma and ocular hypertension--at an early stage. The innovative tonometer also features a pachymeter that calculates and displays corrected eye pressure measurements and cornea thickness.

The CR-2 Digital Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera possesses an energy-efficient design with a white light emitting diode (LED) flash that improves maintenance and uses less power, helping to reduce energy costs in medical facilities. The low flash intensity also minimizes pupil constriction, thereby shortening the time required for taking multiple pictures such as stereo photography; it also helps avoid having to retake images due to patient's blinking. The CR-2 retinal camera also has a small pupil mode, with a 3.3 mm diameter that contributes to efficient screening, and assists when a patient's pupil is difficult to dilate. An auto exposure function optimizes image brightness without having to manually set the observation light and flash intensity.

The CX-1 Hybrid Digital Retinal Camera offers both mydriatic and nonmydriatic modes; with one touch, the operator can automatically switch between modes, utilizing different functions within seconds, and performing several concurrent ocular tests. The CX-1 allows the user to take one-shot Fundus AutFluorescence (FAF) photography in a standard configuration, for both mydriatic and nonmydriatic modes. Using the nonmydriatic mode not only saves time and resources, it can also make the diagnostic procedure more comfortable for the patient.

"As one of the most comprehensive international ophthalmic event in the US, Vision Expo East will be the quintessential venue to preview the TX-20P Full-Auto Tonometer prototype to the eye care market,” said Tsuneo Imai, senior director and general manager of the medical systems division at Canon USA. "Along with the TX-20P Full-Auto Tonometer prototype, Canon is proud to present its entire line of ophthalmic devices to help eyecare professionals easily and efficiently enhance their workflow solutions and provide quality patient care.”

FAF is the occurrence of autofluorescence in macular waste, particularly lipofuscin; retinal examinations that check and monitor autofluorescent waste material are a key step in detecting Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
