Rotational Shaping Technology Cuts Liposuction Time

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 11 May 2011
A new power-assisted liposuction device combines a unique rotational handpiece and multiple user settings, allowing physicians to utilize the system for a wide array of body contouring applications.

The PowerX System is based on a unique rotational motion that allows physicians to remove fatty tissue all the way around the cannula, rather than just above or below the ports, offering a range of function that includes gentle, superficial work to more aggressive, large volume fat removal. More...
The powered handpiece is vented, thus providing continuous, uninterrupted suction that helps to speed up traditional liposuction cases; however, unlike other power-assisted devices, the handpiece is very lightweight and vibration is minimal. A wide range of speed and angle settings allows the physician to tailor the treatment to each patient's needs. The system fits conveniently on top of the proprietary VentX infiltration and aspiration system.

The physician has control over both the rotation angle and the rotation speed of the cannula, allowing quick and effective treatment of fatty areas, while minimizing trauma to the surrounding tissue. For precision sculpting, a lower rotation angle and speed can be chosen to treat more superficial layers; in deeper tissue, a higher rotation angle and speed allow for efficient debulking of larger areas. The PowerX Lipo System also includes a specific Jog mode that allows the physician to orient the openings of any cannula tip to a desired starting point ("home position") prior to the start of the rotation. This ensures that the cannula orifice is positioned correctly inside the body to reduce contour irregularities, and allow for more superficial sculpting applications. The PowerX and VentX systems are products of Sound Surgical Technologies (Louisville, CO, USA), and have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

"I had the opportunity to evaluate the new PowerX System and found it extraordinarily fast using the combination of the fat disruptor and Triport cannulas,” said Antonio Mangubat, MD, a cosmetic surgeon in Tukwila (WA, USA). "I did not think it was possible to exceed 1,000 cc/min with smooth results, but the new system did exactly that with excellent results. I look forward to using it in more challenging cases.”
