Powered Stapling System Reduces Surgeon Effort

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 13 Sep 2012
A fully powered, reusable, battery-operated surgical endostapling platform offers enhanced precision during surgery.

The Covidien iDrive Ultra powered stapling system features one-handed, push-button, operation and unlimited articulation, eliminating the need for manual firing force and improving maneuverability when compared with traditional endomechanical staplers. More...
The stapler uses proprietary technology that provides less stress on tissue during compression and clamping, potentially allowing greater perfusion into the staple line and offering the ability to manage tissue variability. The system is designed for multipatient use, thus streamlining operating room inventory management, and offers an environmentally friendly benefit by reducing medical waste.

The iDrive Ultra features one-handed operation, full articulation of the stapling tool, and improved operator dexterity, since the surgeon does not have to power squeeze the trigger to apply the staples. The iDrive Ultra system is compatible with the entire portfolio of the Endo GIA reloads with tri-staple technology for use in laparoscopic and open surgical procedures. The Covidien iDrive Ultra powered stapling system and Endo GIA staples are a product of Covidien (Dublin, Ireland), and have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“The iDrive Ultra powered stapling system is another example of Covidien’s dedication to innovation and to advancing clinically proven solutions,” said Paul Hermes, vice president and CTO of Covidien Surgical Solutions. “We work closely with surgeons to develop products that not only improve patient outcomes, but also make surgery safer, easier, and more efficient for surgeons.”
