Take-Apart Scissors Enhance Ergonomics and Performance

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 28 Feb 2013
Novel take-apart laparoscopic scissors facilitate sterilization and provide sterile, sharp blades for each procedure.

The Carefusion Snowden-Pencer take-apart laparoscopic scissors are designed for easy assembly and disassembly, providing both an audible and tactile feedback to confirm proper seating. More...
The switch-blade handle of the laparoscopic scissors are designed to more evenly distribute pressure than traditional handles, and accommodates a variety of hand positions (including precision or palm grip) for comfort and precision during surgery. The ergonomic, reusable ring-handle also fits Snowden-Pencer take-apart clamps, dissectors, and graspers.

The take-apart scissors provide a fresh blade and insulated shaft for each use—reducing the need to clean and inspect the shaft and insulation—a potential cost saving compared to fully disposable scissors. The scissors have been tested for use on various surgical materials and for consistent mixed hot and cold cutting without snagging. The Snowden-Pencer scissors are available in curved Metzenbaum and mini-Metzenbaum configurations (in both 36 mm and 45 mm sizes); a hook-blade configuration will be available within the next few months. The Snowden-Pencer take-apart laparoscopic scissors are a product of Carefusion (San Diego, CA, USA).

“The new Snowden-Pencer laparoscopic scissors are very modular, so we can adjust a tray as we see fit to create a very cost-effective approach to our surgeries,” said Ryan Tyner, MD, a bariatric surgeon at Lovelace Westside Hospital in Albuquerque (NM, USA). “I prefer to use the best instruments for my patients, and my personal opinion is that this is the best line on the market.”
