Soft Tissue Anchor Secures Tendons to Bone

An innovative shape memory-fixation device attaches a tendon, ligament, or soft tissue to bone in the shoulder, knee, hand or wrist, and foot or ankle.

The Eclipse Soft Tissue Anchor is a two-part sheath-and-bullet device that offers strong fixation, easy insertion, and versatility thanks to an innovative nonrotational insertion method. More...
Because it is compressed on one side, the Eclipse allows more space for surgeons to accommodate a tendon alongside the implant. The Eclipse anchor is loaded on a disposable gun for fast and intuitive implantation; an open tip in the sheath allows a suture to be fed through the implant, and the nontapered shape provides more soft tissue compression across the bone.

The Eclipse is made of polyetheretherketone (PEEK), and it is biocompatible, radiolucent, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) safe. The highly deformable PEEK shape memory polymer (SMP) allows the Eclipse anchor to be compressed into a temporary form to facilitate easy insertion into a target surgical site, and later expanded into its final functional geometry for fixation without loss of mechanical integrity. The Eclipse Soft Tissue Anchor is a product of MedShape (Atlanta, GA, USA), is available in diameters of 4–9 mm, and 10–20 mm in length, and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“The Eclipse Soft Tissue Anchor provides a nonrotational insertion and fixation method that maintains graft bundle orientation and tension with simplified delivery,” said Jack Griffis, lead development engineer for Eclipse. “The eccentric shape and 2x sheath expansion provide enhanced soft tissue fixation for surgeons. As a leader in shape memory devices, we are proud to respond to physician demand with this innovative product.”
