New Device Streamlines Kidney Stone Management

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 16 Sep 2013
A new tool simplifies percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) procedures by combining suction control and lithotripter laser-fiber access.

The LithAssist system allows physicians to control suction more easily during the PCNL procedure by employing an ergonomic handle used to position the laser fiber and suction at the same time, with just one hand. More...
The resulting added control helps the surgeon to synchronize the procedure, as well as freeing an assistant to help with other aspects of the procedure. The LithAssist system works with any holmium laser and does not require the purchase of any additional capital equipment.

The PCNL procedure involves a one-centimeter incision in the loin. A PCN needle is then passed into the pelvis of the kidney and confirmed by fluoroscopy. A guide wire is passed through the needle into the pelvis; dilators are then passed over the guide wire and a working sheath is introduced. The LithAssist system is then directed towards the kidney and the stones are broken up and removed. The LithAssist system is a product of Cook Medical (Bloomington, IN, USA), and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“Our goal for this product is to help physicians use their lasers for PCNL procedures in a simple way,” said Jean-Marc Creissel, global leader of the Cook Medical urology division. “Streamlined procedures are beneficial for the physician, the hospital and ultimately the patient. This is just one more example of our commitment to solving problems for physicians.”
