New Catheter Helps Remove Coronary Thrombus

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 02 Dec 2013
A next-generation aspiration catheter offers greater power and superior deliverability to remove thrombi from coronary arteries.

The Export Advance aspiration catheter features a preloaded stylet core wire that runs through the middle of the shaft, providing more support during delivery and increases deliverability and kink resistance while traversing the vasculature to reach the aspiration site. More...
The device was engineered with an optimized soft, short tip for increased deliverability and a forward-facing aspect for effective thrombus aspiration.

To further optimize performance, the Export Advance is also constructed with full-wall variable braiding technology, which provides graded degrees of stiffness along the length of the device to enhance flexibility at the distal end and pushability at the proximal end while navigating the device through the vasculature. The Export Advance aspiration catheter is a product of Medtronic (Minneapolis, MN, USA), and has received the European community CE marking of approval.

“With the Export Advance aspiration catheter, Medtronic has taken the power and deliverability of manual thrombectomy devices to a new level,” said Hoang Thai, MD, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Arizona (Tucson, USA).

Use of aspiration has dramatically increased worldwide since 2008, following studies that showed that the use of aspiration catheters prior to coronary stenting demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in cardiac death at one year, compared to those who did not receive aspiration.
