Boom System Supports Minimally Invasive Surgery

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 26 May 2014
A novel boom system provides an equipment organizational system that removes trip hazards and clutter during minimally invasive surgery (MIS).

The NuBOOM S system is an all-in-one equipment management, visualization, and ergonomic boom designed to meet the budgetary needs and technical requirements of ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) and office based surgery centers (OBLs). More...
Since both ASCs and OBLs have a limited number of procedures they are authorized to perform, they require much less variability in diagnostic imaging equipment used; the NuBOOM S thus helps them save many of the costs associated with a ceiling supported boom system.

The system includes a cabinet populated with electrical outlets to improve safety by removing cords from the floor, with an enclosed cable pathway to conceal the cords and quicken terminal cleaning; an integrated shelf system of up to six shelves that rotate away from the sterile field; and arms for dual 24-inch flat displays with six image source inputs (DVI-D, HD-SDI, VGA, SOG 1,SOG 2, S-VIDEO). The displays can be positioned for sitting, short, or tall surgeons, and provide a comfortable 15° downwards viewing angle. An optional third arm can be used for lighting or to hang a radiation shield.

Since the NuBOOM S is anchored to the floor, instead of being suspended from the operating room ceiling, expensive remodeling to reinforce the ceiling is avoided. An added benefit is that the system can be installed in less than a day, thus avoiding costly renovation and installation downtime. And because it is a constructed structure, rather than being built-in into the ceiling infrastructure, it can be relocated as space needs change or if the property leasehold expires. The NuBOOM S boom system is a product of CompView Medical (CVM; Beaverton, OR, USA).

“Our surgery clients asked us to develop a NuBoom product addressing the ASC and OBL environment with a smaller foot print, fewer monitors, lower costs, and we are tremendously excited to deliver such a product,” said Paul White, President of CVM. “The economics of healthcare are driving an increasing number of surgical procedures from hospitals to ASCs and OBLs and surgeons expect to have the same quality of visualization outside of the hospital.”

“NuBOOM has been an ideal visualization solution for our busy endoscopy unit. We have two systems installed and they provide excellent quality images and help us to minimize room turnover time,” said Isaac Raijman, MD, of Digestive Associates of Houston (TX, USA). “CompView’s technicians accommodated our surgery schedule to avoid disruption and there was virtually no downtime associated with the installation of the NuBOOM. It has been reliable and I am very pleased with its performance.”
