A new collaborative tool will enable surgeons the freedom to plan surgical procedures in a standard browser, eliminating the requirement for additional software.

The collaboration will leverage the Materialise (Leuven, Belgium) OrthoView software onto the Carestream Health (Rochester, NY, USA) work-in-progress zero footprint pre-operative planning solution for orthopedists, and does not require dedicated workstations that limit use to fixed locations and devices inside the hospital. Clinicians will have access to a full range of pre-operative planning tools from any device within a hospital system in a safe, secure fashion, as no patient data is stored on devices.

The collaboration was formed to address the current and future needs of customers in relation to two dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) pre-operative planning, 3D printing, virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI), in order to help provide customers with the best patient and surgeon-specific predictive surgical planning options, ensure better patient surgical outcomes and avoid unexpected and unwanted complications during surgery, and promote efficiency in the operating room.

“Partnerships and collaborations are at the heart of Materialise’s philosophy of co-creation. The new collaborative solution with Carestream, a long-standing partner of Materialise, gives surgeons greater flexibility to deliver personalized patient care,” said Anna Marchenko, product manager for OrthoView at Materialise. “We see significant value in collaborating in this initiative to offer an innovative hospital-wide deployment option to our mutual customers.”

“We’ve worked closely with Materialise and specifically Materialise OrthoView for many years, and appreciate their dedication to finding new ways of providing customer-focused solutions,” said Thierry Verstraete, global product manager for clinical solutions and analytics at Carestream Health.

Materialise OrthoView is a pre-operative planning software for orthopedics, including primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasties, shoulder and small joint replacements, fracture management, and deformity correction procedures. The planning is conducted using the patients digital x-rays and an extensive prosthesis template library and intuitive, procedure-specific tools. OrthoView is compatible with all picture archiving and communication systems (PACS).
