Next-Generation PEF System Delivers Larger Ablation Zones for Soft-Tissue Procedures

Interventional teams often need soft-tissue ablation options that can be performed percutaneously or endoscopically while minimizing collateral injury and preserving procedural workflow. More...

Non-thermal energy approaches are designed to induce regulated cell death without heat-related damage while fitting within established diagnostic and therapeutic pathways. A new system now extends this approach with a larger ablation zone delivered by pulsed electric fields across both procedural routes.

Galvanize Therapeutics has completed the first commercial procedures using its recently U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-cleared Aliya EX System. The milestone follows FDA 510(k) clearance in May 2026. It represents the first clinical use of the platform and spans both of its primary delivery pathways: percutaneous and endoscopic approaches.

Aliya EX is the next-generation generator for the Aliya Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) System and delivers high‑voltage, short‑duration electrical pulses to induce non‑thermal regulated cell death during surgical ablation of soft tissue. The system is designed to preserve surrounding tissue architecture and to remain compatible with existing oncologic diagnostic workflows and standard therapies. According to the company, Aliya EX can deliver up to twice the ablation diameter, resulting in as much as a sevenfold increase in ablation volume while maintaining the defining attributes of Aliya PEF.

The first commercial cases included a percutaneous procedure at Duke University School of Medicine and an endoscopic procedure at Eisenhower Health. The company stated that these initial procedures demonstrate the intended performance of the expanded system while preserving familiar workflows. The platform is positioned to broaden patient eligibility across both delivery routes.

“Aliya EX allows us to offer PEF to patients who previously may not have been candidates. It gives us a larger ablation zone while preserving the predictable, non-thermal energy delivery that have become hallmarks of the Aliya platform,” said Joseph Mammarapallil, M.D., Associate Professor of Radiology at Duke University School of Medicine.

“Many of the patients I see have exhausted multiple treatment options. Aliya EX expands the patients I can consider for PEF ablation while maintaining the favorable safety profile and unique immunostimulatory potential that first drew me to this technology,” said Justin Thomas, M.D., Director of Interventional Pulmonology at Eisenhower Health.
